Full-time M-Th *8:30-5:30, F 8:30-5:00, some weekend work required

Salary range $24,000 - $26,000

Job Summary 
The purpose of this position is to provide an up-to-date non-fiction collection both digital and in print to meet adult patron information and educational needs; to help patrons find information quickly and effectively. The Reference/Digital Strategies Librarian will provide ongoing development and organization of the genealogy collection, and instruct patrons in methods of research in print and online. The Reference/Digital Strategies Librarian possesses technical skills and will manage digital projects, which include digitizing, processing, archiving and preserving materials. May supervise student workers and volunteers.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Makes all patrons feel welcome and comfortable in the library, especially when requesting information and assistance

  • Develops and keeps current and relevant the reference collection (both print and electronic)

  • Processes and prepares digital files for archiving, printing, and access purposes using image manipulation, OCR, and other related software

  • Provides access to digital holdings by uploading to the Library’s website and to Mississippi Digital Library (MDL)

  • Consult with MDL on policies and procedures

  • Utilizes scanning equipment, PCs, and related software for the digital capture of library materials in accordance with established standards

  • Describes digital holdings online in accordance with the Library’ metadata procedures and practices and how to access them

  • Has the ability to create and maintain a website

  • Keeps abreast of current trends in the digital library field

  • Provides ongoing development and organization of the Mississippi Room

  • Helps patrons with research including genealogy

  • Assists patrons doing research in the use of computers and microfilm readers to find information within the online collection

  • Communicates effectively in writing

  • Has the ability or develops the skill of writing small grant applications

  • Guides the work of library support staff, student workers, and volunteers on projects

  • Leads in planning and providing programs, materials, and services designed to meet the needs of adult patrons

  • Participates in planning, implementation, and problem solving for special projects and routine work assignments

  • Keeps informed of current trends and developments in library service and information

  • Participates in print selections with special responsibility for reference materials and adult non-fiction collection

  • Checks standard and current professional aids for recommendation for reference collection additions

  • Prepares annotations for publicity on reference books, tools, vertical files, and local history materials both in print and online

  • Attends applicable workshops, conferences, and continuing-education courses as offered

  • Weeds reference print collection, organizes vertical files and state documents

  • Explains the use of the library and its services to patrons, tour groups, classes

  • Enables people to be as self-reliant as possible in using the library by showing them how to use reference sources

  • Works closely with other staff in meeting the needs of the public and the library

  • Participates in cross-training to support broad library goals of quality customer service

  • Assists at the circulation desk when necessary

  • Learns and becomes proficient in the use of the library’s automation system

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Participates in the Saturday work schedule and other work schedules, which may include evenings and Sundays if service hours change

  • Able to manage and comprehend multiple work processes

  • Uses logic and reasoning effectively in digitizing materials

  • Manages time to complete high quality work

  • Able to adjust work task priorities as needed

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Library Science or closely related field)

  • Knowledge of and interest in local history

  • Customer Service: understands and practices the principles of customer service; skilled in working with people

  • Understands digitizing and has the ability to digitally preserve the libraries’ primary source materials by utilizing scanning equipment, PCs, and related software for digital capture

  • Can create and maintain a website

  • Imagination in and enthusiasm for organizing information and making it available

  • Microsoft Office: knows and effectively uses Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) at a minimum and is able to learn other applications as needed
